LESSON 5 - Miscellaneous Resources

Directories

booksAnother general reference source which you can consult for information related to your Holocaust topic (or any other topic) is the Encyclopedia of Associations. The Encyclopedia of Associations is available in most libraries. In the Macdonald DeWitt Library it is in the Reference area at REF 060 E56. It is not really an encyclopedia in the usual sense, but a directory of organizations arranged by category and searchable by keyword indexing. Remember the index first strategy. It really is the most effective way to discover the number of organizations and associations related to the Holocaust in general and Holocaust survivors in particular. How many organizations related to the Holocaust do you think there are? There are many US based organizations. More can be found in an international edition of the same reference source.

The important thing to learn about this source, is that there is an organization or association for almost every topic. Click here for examples of other directory type publications commonly found in reference collections.

You can also find directories of many types on the Internet. The most common are telephone directories and business directories, but there are directories of organizations as well.

Let's practice finding information in Guidestar.org, an online database of nonprofit organizations.
