If you want to be thorough researching children of Holocaust survivors from a psychological perspective, you will also need to search PsychFirst, which is an online version of Psychological Abstracts. This specialized index will include citations for books and journal articles that are not included in a general index like the Expanded Academic.
Searching a Specialized Database
Subject headings, also called Descriptors, for this database can be found in print in the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, which is in most academic libraries. This regularly revised controlled vocabulary lists the specialized indexing terms related to your query in this database. Descriptors identified include "Holocaust Survivors," "Offspring" (which is used for children whose parents had significant experiences or conditions), and "Posttraumatic Stress Disorder." Always check if the database you are searching uses a controlled vocabulary.
There are specialized databases for all disciplines. The following list should give you an idea of the scope of what's available:
- GeoRef (geology and earth sciences)
- Literature Resource Center
- ArtStor
- CINAHL (nursing)
- ERIC (education)
- Business and Company Resource Center (business)
- ScienceDirect
- Criminal Justice Periodical Index
