Atlases

Not only are there subject encyclopedias related to your research topic, there is even a specialized atlas. Road maps? Not exactly. While you may think of atlases only as containing maps and geographic information, many atlases contain historical, scientific or socioeconomic information in graphical form. The Macmillian Atlas of the Holocaust has over 300 detailed maps and photographs which may make your research more meaningful, such as the map, "Jews marked out for death, 20 January 1942."

Atlases and collections of maps, can now be found on the Internet as libraries digitize their collections and make them available. One excellent resource is the Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection maintained by the documents department at the University of Texas. It provides access to over 2000 public-domain maps which can be viewed, printed and downloaded. Among the collection are historical maps, world city maps, US federal agency maps and well as links to other map-related sites.
