More Evaluation

Sometimes WorldCat records also include a table of contents field (TOC) as well as a notes field and series field. The TOC books field lists the chapter headings of the book which are useful to see how the book is structured and to help you evaluate the scope of the book. Some records in WorldCat also contain abstracts, or summaries, of the contents of the book. This is further information to help you evaluate the book.

Be aware that in this database, dissertations or theses are treated as books. Theses are not always useful for undergraduates and may not be available or available for free through interlibrary loan.

Note the date of publication of the book. Sometimes it is important to have current information, for example, when working on topics in the field of science. Other times your topic may not require the most current information or you may be seeking a classic work in the field which was published years ago. When searching for information about the psychological issues related to the children of Holocaust survivors, currency may not be the defining factor.

Finally, sometimes it is important to take a look at the publisher of the book. If the book was published by You Can Publish Your Book Yourself Press or something similar, perhaps this book may not be the scholarly tome you are seeking on your subject.

All of this information should help you decide whether you wish to actually obtain a copy of this book through the interlibrary loan process.
