What is a Citation?

You have been told by your teacher that you must cite your sources. So what is a citation? Very simply, it's stating the important information describing your sources so that the reader can find the original material you used. What do you need? Usually you include the following:

author

title

publisher or web site

place of publication

date

volume and page numbers

Perhaps the most common format for citation in the Humanities is MLA style. For citing your sources, see the links on the next page.

In the Social Sciences, most students and scholars use APA style. This method of citation is described in the most recent edition of the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, which can be found in your library's reference room. For citing web sources, use the links on the next page.
